Ever since I was a child, video games have been the entry into a new world. It started off with Blues Clues on an old laptop and worked its way up to playing Call of Duty on the Playstation. Every moment was like a dream come true. Close to reality but also so far away. Every challenge was put to heart and overcome with either anger or excitement. But I never thought that something like virtual reality would ever be something real. I’ve seen people play with the Oculus Rift and it’s not the same as actually using it. When I first put on the mask, I was put into a new world. The first game I played was First Contact. The game was absolutely beautiful. It made me both laugh and tear up. All those emotions started pouring out, tugging on the corners of lips into an endless smile. But most importantly, it changed my views on video games. I felt so immersed in the experience so much so that I do not think games should be played any other way. Don’t get my wrong, I think it’s a good thing to appreciate the different ways of playing video games. But once I tried virtual reality, I got hooked. I never felt so inspired to learn more, to play more. You could be a knight fighting dragons or a robot playing frisbee in space. The possibilities are endless and the experiences are so real. I even had a chance to face two of my biggest fears; falling from heights and dying in space. I wouldn’t have had that chance unless actually threatened with death. For that, I am grateful for virtual reality. In the future, I hope to continue to use virtual reality whether it be from the equipment from school, or buying the Playstation VR at home. Either way, I can not wait to experience what technology has to offer.
