What I Learned in Careers in Media Class...

Within my Careers and Media class, I have learned a lot. I learned that there are so many careers out there within the media industry. Anything you can think of, there it is. I also learned that you can create your own job when there is a significant need. But all of that becomes easier when you network. If I got anything out of the class, it is to network with anyone you meet. Getting a job without networking is extremely difficult especially if you want to get a top paying job. It is all about who you know and who knows you. You also have to be nice to people and be willing to do grunt work. Going up the “ladder” of good jobs is long and tedious but definitely pays off in the end.

A good way to find jobs is through Linkedin. This website allows you to find people with similar interests as well as those hiring. You are able to set up your profile to show your work experience and skills, similar to that of a resume. This helps employers get a quick look at who you are and how well of a worker you would be. You can even link your website to your Linkin and vise versa. This allows employers to view your portfolio, allowing you to stand out in the crowd of possible employees. Hopefully within the future, I can continue to update my website with more of my work that I do within my last few classes.

Another thing I learned was what I wanted to do as a career. I knew beforehand I wanted a job in multimedia. The problem with that was that the multimedia industry is so broad in relation to other career choices, making it harder to find where I belong. But when I was in the Careers in Media, I learned that I wanted to do creative services. This particular job includes many of the things I am doing now. Those things include computer graphics, animation, and film. All of which I would like to explore more. The reason why I wanted to do creative services was because I did not want my everyday life to feel like the same thing over and over again. But rather something new everyday.

I also learned how to dress for a job. Workers should show up to their job dressed professionally. Even clothing some people deem appropriate, may not be what your employer is looking for. I believe the best option is to ask ahead of time, ensuring that your job is not going to be lost over the choice of clothing that day.

I enjoyed the class greatly because it introduced me to workers and even some business owners who I’ve personally talked to and looked into as a possible internship for the following semester. Without that class, I would not have known what I wanted to do in regards to that internship. All in all, having a class that teaches about the different careers was really helpful and I enjoyed it.
